About Aviation Environmental Protection

The AEP department is accountable for environmental protection issues that result from aviation operations. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Aircraft noise (monitoring, reporting, measurement and noise abatement procedures)
  • Aircraft emissions (local air quality)
  • Aerodromes and heliports (EMPs, consultative committees and monitoring of aircraft noise)
  • Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) (State requirements)

Aviation Environmental Protection: Industry Roadmap

The SACAA has developed a Roadmap for use by all its stakeholders as guidance on the issues and timelines relating to Aviation Environmental Protection. AEP aerodrome audits

AEP aerodrome inspections are conducted in accordance with Part 139. Please note that these inspections are currently applicable to international airports only. These are notified prior to the annual renewal of their licenses.

Chapter 2 aircraft

From 1 January 2016 Chapter 2 aircraft shall not be operated in the Republic as stipulated by Part 91.

State Action Plan (SAP)

ICAO requires States to develop Action Plans on how they are addressing CO2 emissions from international aviation. The SACAA assisted the Department of Transport in the development of the first RSA SAP. Please use the links below for more information:
