Aviation Environmental Protection

About Aviation Environmental Protection

The AEP department is dedicated to promoting a sustainable and environmentally responsible aviation industry. Its environmental protection mandate aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) outlined in Annex 16. These SARPs are subsequently adapted Into Civil Aviation Regulations and related technical standards. The focus areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Aircraft noise (monitoring, reporting, measurement and noise abatement procedures)
  • Aircraft emissions (local air quality)
  • Aerodromes and heliports (Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs), consultative committees and monitoring of aircraft noise)
  • Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)

Regulations Update

AEP ensures that the Civil Aviation Regulations and technical standards are updated and aligned with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARP’s), Annexure 16.

Aviation Environmental Protection: Industry Roadmap

The SACAA has developed a Roadmap for use by all its stakeholders as guidance on the issues and timelines relating to Aviation Environmental Protection. Please contact environment@caa.co.za to access the latest roadmap. This roadmap is a live document and subject to change as per some activities and ICAO timelines.

AEP aerodrome audits

AEP aerodrome oversight is conducted in compliance with Part 139 regulations. Currently, this oversight applies exclusively to international airports and is scheduled in advance of the annual license renewal process.

Chapter 2 aircraft

From 1 January 2016 Chapter 2 aircraft shall not be operated in the Republic as stipulated by Part 91.

State Action Plan (SAP)

ICAO requires States to develop Action Plans on how they are addressing CO2 emissions from international aviation. The SACAA assisted the Department of Transport in the development of the first RSA SAP. Please use the links below for more information:

Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)

CORSIA is an initiative developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to address the aviation sector’s carbon emissions. The main goal of CORSIA is to stabilize the level of carbon emissions from international aviation by offsetting the growth in emissions.
