What is the Articulation of Aviation Technical Qualifications?

In simple terms, The Articulation of Aviation Technical Qualifications Project aims to provide a SAQA recognition for flight crew qualifications.

Background:

The 2019 Covid pandemic, presented a myriad of challenges, that have required the industry to take a moment to introspect and find ways to improve itself to face these and many other challenges that may arise in future. One such challenge was the loss of employment for Aviators, who in turn could not take the skills that they had acquired in the industry and transfer these elsewhere in order to obtain gainful employment.  One of the reasons for this was the fact that many of the flight crew licenses are not currently articulated onto the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and therefore are not recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

The SACAA has therefore initiated the Articulation of Aviation Technical Qualifications Project to address these concerns and as another way through which it is working to develop and advance the industry.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this projects are to:

  1. Ensure, in partnership with the industry, the articulate the aviation licenses and qualifications onto the NQF
  2. Establish development paths for aviators and the transferability of the knowledge and skills gained in the aviation industry
  3. Increase access to funding for aviation training programmes and qualifications
  4. Increase the accessibility of the aviation qualification programmes

Goals:

The goals of the project are:

  1. To identify the full spectrum of Aviation professions with qualifications that are not articulated onto the NQF
  2. Bring together all relevant Aviation Industry Players to participate in the development of these qualifications
  3. To create developmental paths for Aviators as they seek to grow and advance their careers, thus ensuring the attractiveness of the industry and the retention of talent.
