Processing of an Examination Application
In
order to process any examination application the following will be required:
- A Private Pilot
licence or a licence that has not expired for more than 60 months.
- Completed
application form.
- Preferred examination
dates.
- Applicable fee
as prescribed in Part 187, payable either at the CAA or at any Standard
Bank.

General examination rules:
- As from 1 January
2008 a person may enter for one subject at a time. All subjects must be completed within 18
months from the date of passing the first examination subject.
- Examinations are
formal and conducted in accordance with customary examination procedures
and requirements, as well as specific departmental instructions, which are
supplied to candidates beforehand. Candidates must also note that the use
of programmable calculators/ computers in the examinations is not
permitted and no other electronic apparatus of any nature, except for
authorized calculators/ computers may be taken into the examination hall.
The validity periods of examinations are the
following:
- All pilot’s
licences and ratings- 36 months
- ATPL subjects -
60 Months from last Instrument Rating renewal
- Flight Engineer
- 24 Months
- Cabin Crew- 6 Months
There are 2 options for examinations:
- Written
examinations (except PPL and Flight Instructor) at out stations. (Cape
Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban)
- Online
examinations

and Flight Instructor at CAA (Midrand) and any approved online test centre
2.
All
other examinations at CAA (Midrand) only
