CAA releases the final accident report pertaining to the accident ZS-OJU, Hawker Siddely 748

 

The report on the accident of the HS 748 type of aircraft, registration ZS-OJU, which occurred on 1 June 2002, has been released by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, (CAA).

 

The report indicates the probable causes of the accident to be human factor related, with weather and mechanical as well as technological factors contributing. Full details can be found in the accident investigation report, which may be purchased from the CAA offices in Nieuw Muckleneuk (Near Brooklyn Mall) in Pretoria. In terms of Civil Aviation Regulation 12.05.2 (1), “any interested person who feels aggrieved by the findings on an investigation may appeal against such findings to the Commissioner [for Civil Aviation] within 30 days after such person becomes aware of such findings.” Should an appeal be lodged, the Commissioner will adjudicate such appeal and thereafter may confirm, vary or set aside the findings of the report. Should the Commissioner set aside the findings of the investigation, he/she may order the re-opening of the investigation.

 

The CAA wishes to stress that, in terms of its mandate as contained in the current civil aviation legislations, the purpose of the investigation of an accident is to determine the facts of the accident in the interest of the promotion of aviation safety and the reduction of the risk of aviation accidents, and to not to establish legal liability.

 

The CAA once again wishes to convey its sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased for the loss of their loved ones.
