The CAA will
issue a new format of aviation personnel licences
with effect from 3 September 2001 at its offices in Brooklyn, Pretoria.
"Aviation
personnel such as pilots, flight engineers, aircraft maintenance engineers, and
air traffic controllers can look forward to a pocket size licence,
which also boasts plastic sleeves to secure pages containing personal and licence details," said General Manager
: Air Safety Operations, Sakhile Nyoni.
Each page
has a bar code at the bottom, which contains all information reflected on a
particular page. The information is read by using a scanner and has to
correspond to the information typed on each page.
Furthermore,
each page has a carbon strip, which prevents the information contained in the
bar code from being photocopied. Any variations or fraudulent amendments of
information are therefore easy to detect.
The licences are easy to identify as each type of licence has been allocated a specific colour
in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation
(ICAO) requirements. The colours have been allocated
as follows:
Private pilot
-
light brown
Commercial pilot
-
light blue
Airline Transport pilot
-
dark green
Private Helicopter pilot
-
light grey
Commercial Helicopter
-
dark grey
Airline Transport Helicopter pilot
-
white and two dark grey stripes
Flight Engineers
-
brown
Aircraft Maintenance engineers
-
maroon
Air traffic controllers
-
yellow
"The
various security features of the new licence ensure
the integrity of our licences not only in South
Africa, but also internationally," said Commissioner for Civil Aviation,
Trevor Abrahams.
