Information on Licenced Airports

Currently, South Africa has approximately 125 licenced airports/aerodromes categorized as either public or private as well as 54 approved heli-stops.

Nine of the above airports form part of the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA):

Johannesburg INTL Airport, Cape Town INTL Airport, Durban INTL Airport, East London Airport, Port Elizabeth Airport, George Airport, Bloemfontein Airport, Kimberley Airport and Upington Airport


Information on Air Traffic Control Services

Air traffic control services are provided at 23 airports in the country.

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company (ATNS), provides air traffic control services at the following airports:

All the ACSA airports, as well as at Lanseria, Rand, Wonderboom, Nelspruit, Pilanesburg, Mmabatho, Virginia, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Welkom and Alexander Bay.

ACSA is also responsible for airport management at Pilanesburg and Pietersburg INTL.


Information on Air Traffic Control Services

Air traffic control services are provided at 23 airports in the country.

The Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company (ATNS), provides air traffic control services at the following airports:

All the ACSA airports, as well as at Lanseria, Rand, Wonderboom, Nelspruit, Pilanesburg, Mafikeng, Virginia, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Welkom, Pietersburg INTL and Alexander Bay.

Other service providers also provide air traffic control services at Bisho Airport, Umtata Airport.

The above air traffic service units (ATSU’s), are staffed by approximately 190 active/valid air traffic controllers (ATC’s).


Information on Air Traffic Movements (ATM’s)

During the calender year of 2000, a total of 549 690 air traffic movements (ATM’s), Arrivals and Departures, were handled at all the Air Traffic Control Airports. Of these movements, the ATNS controlled airports represented 513 666 movements.

Bisho had 162, Umtata 8 722 and Gateway INTL 7 050 movements.

Grand Central does not have an air traffic control service but only an advisory service (AFIS), yet the airport had a total of 20 090 ATM’s last year.

Domestic and International Flights for 1999/2000

Johannesburg INTL Airport handled a total of 11.33 million passengers during 1999 as opposed to 10.05 million passengers in 1998.
