Proposals for amendment of regulations pertaining to Part 138 
(Emergency Medical Services Operations)

A workshop pertaining to Part 138 (EMS operations) was held at the CAA on 18 February 2000. The objective of the workshop was to identify and discuss uncertainties regarding the regulations and to consult with the industry before amendments were made to the existing regulations.

At the workshop a workgroup was identified to review Part 138 operations in totality. The first meeting of the workgroup was held at the CAA on 29 February 2000. The following was decided:

  1. EMS operators will establish an association to function as the voice of the industry in future.

  1. The CAA in collaboration with the Department of Health will establish a Commission of Accreditation for EMS operators to ensure that a high standard of EMS service is provided nationally and internationally.

  1. All proposals pertaining to amendment of Part 138 will be forwarded to the workgroup for discussion before submission to CARCOM.

All proposals submitted to CARCOM will be published in the Government Gazette for comment.

  1. Progress reports will be forwarded to all participants of the initial workshop, as well as all interested parties. Please forward your details to Dr Ansa Jordaan at CAA if you are interested in receiving progress reports.

  2. A second workshop will be held in future to submit the final report to all interested parties. The date of the next workshop will be published on the web site.
