Technical Approved Person


Requirements

You are required to familiarize yourself with Civil Aviation Technical Standards (CATS) Part 66 sub part 10, Part 24, Part 94 and Part 96. In order to apply for your Approved Person (AP) certificate you need to comply with the procedures laid down in the Manual of Procedure.

You will also need to submit proof of current paid up membership of the Aero Club of South Africa and paid up membership of a Aero Club section e.g. EAA, SAGPA, MISASA etc.


First Application for New AP Rating

Please submit:

  • Copy of ID document or Passport.
  • 2 x ID / Passport sized photo's of applicant.
  • Application form correctly and completely filled in.
  • Proof of appropriate experience on aircraft and equipment over the preceding two year period.
  • Proof of payment for issue of AP rating book and stamp.
  • If examinations are required to be written you are reminded that a fee is charged.
  • Please send your application form and supporting documents to the Rand Airport Office via registered mail. No email, fax, pigeon post, etc. will be accepted.

 

AP Renewals

Please submit:

  • Proof of current paid up membership of the Aero Club of South Africa and paid up membership of an Aero Club section e.g. EAA, SAGPA, MISASA etc.
  • Proof of appropriate experience on aircraft and equipment over the preceding two year period.
  • Application form correctly and thoroughly completed.
  • Proof of payment for renewal of AP rating.
  • Lastly, please send your application form and supporting documents to the Rand Airport Office via registered mail. No email, fax, pigeon post, etc. will be accepted.

 

Classes of Certificates

The following classes of certificates are issued:

  1. APC1 – Inspection Certificate - Which does not include inspections on repair or modification work

  2. APC2 – Repair & Maintenance Certificate - Which includes inspections on repair, maintenance or modification work which has been done as well as carrying out such work

  3. APC3 – Restricted Inspection Certificate - For airframes and/or engines, issued by type, excluding inspections on modifications and repairs.


Categories of ratings

(1) Category A rating, for all types of—
(i) aeroplanes registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); or
(ii) rotorcraft registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation

(2);Category B rating, for all types of—
(i) aeroplanes registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); or
(ii) rotorcraft registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2);

Category C rating, for all types of engines installed in—
(i) aeroplanes registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); or
(ii) rotorcraft registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); and

Category D rating, for all types of engines installed in—
(i) aeroplanes registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); or
(ii) rotorcraft registered in the Republic, either singly or in the groups referred to in subregulation (2); and

Category W rating, for any—
(i) avionic equipment;
(ii) electrical equipment;
(iii) instrument equipment; or
(iv) combination of such equipment, installed in aircraft registered in the Republic.

 Category X rating, for—
(i) the installation of compasses;
(ii) the installation of engine ignition equipment;
(iii) the installation of variable-pitch propellers;
(iv) the installation of instruments, including or excluding electrically operated instruments;
(v) the installation of electrical equipment;
(vi) the installation of automatic pilots; or
(vii) the installation of avionic equipment, including or excluding equipment employing pulse techniques.

Groups of Airframes and Engines:

Airframes—
(i) Group 1 – aeroplanes of wooden construction (MCM of 5 700 kg or less);
(ii) Group 2 – aeroplanes constructed of composites ( MCM of 5 700 kg or less);
(iii) Group 3 – aeroplanes of fabric-covered tubular-metal construction, (MCM of 5 700 kg or less);
(iv) Group 4 – unpressurised aeroplanes of all-metal construction (MCM of 5 700 kg or less);
(v) Group 5 – pressurised aeroplanes of all-metal construction (MCM of 5 700 kg or less);
(vi) Group 6 – unpressurised aeroplanes of all-metal construction (MCM exceeding 5 700 kg);
(vii) Group 7 – rotorcraft powered by reciprocating engines;
(viii) Group 8 – pressurised aeroplanes of all-metal construction (MCM exceeding 5 700 kg);
(ix) Group 9 – rotorcraft powered by turbine jet engines ( MCM of 3 180 kg or less);
(x) Group 10 – rotorcraft powered by turbine jet engines (MCM exceeding 3 180 kg);
(xi) Group 11 – aeroplanes constructed of composites (MCM exceeding 5 700 kg);
(xii) Group 12 – balloons;
(xiii) Group 13 – trikes; and
(xiv) Group 14 – all other aircraft.

Engines—
(i) Group 01 – all horizontally opposed normally-aspirated piston engines;
(ii) Group 02 – all horizontally opposed turbo-normalised, turbo-charged and supercharged piston engines;
(iii) Group 03 – all in-line piston engines;
(iv) Group 04 – all radial engines;
(v) Group 05 – turbine jet engines; and
(vi) Group 06 – all other (non- aviation) engines.
